Residential: Kitchen
This kitchen was transformed by the presence and majesty of a hammered copper hood above the stove - in this context, it joins its substance with the weight of the heavy wooden molding beneath.
The unpainted hood, as white as the walls around, felt lackluster in comparison to its rich wood molding. Given carte blanche to decorate it, Michael Lee chose to re-imagine even the materials from which it was crafted.
In addition to his customary detail work (each rivet is lovingly hammered in place by Michael Lee’s brush), here we can also see the artist’s love for placing a piece in context. Drawing elements from the physical objects in the client’s kitchen, a piece of delft pottery and a string of aging garlic hang from a cast iron rod.
Michael Lee was inspired by the hammered copper used in old candy kettles.
The metalwork of the bar which Michael Lee added to the copper hood was designed to match other ornamental fixtures in the kitchen.
